How Often Should Your Child Practise Maths at Home?

Little and often. If you want one answer, that is it: around 15 minutes of maths on most days of the week beats one long session at the weekend, and it is not close. Five short sessions spread across a week will do more for your child than an hour of catching up on a Saturday morning, even though the total time is similar.

That surprises a lot of parents. An hour feels like it should be worth more. In practice, the way the maths is scheduled matters as much as how much of it there is.

Why short, regular sessions beat one long one

Two things happen when you space practice out.

The first is that your child's brain gets time to do its own work in between. Learning does not stop when the pencil goes down. In the gaps between sessions, and particularly during sleep, the brain consolidates what it has taken in, strengthens the connections and starts to notice patterns. Cram everything into one block and you remove those gaps entirely.

The second is more practical. A child who has been at school from eight until three has already spent a full day concentrating. Asking them to sit down for another hour and a half of maths does not usually produce ninety minutes of learning. It produces a child who is present but not really thinking, and who now associates maths with the worst part of their day.

Spacing learning out over time, rather than piling it into one block, is one of the better-supported principles in the Education Endowment Foundation's review of cognitive science in the classroom. The EEF is careful to say the classroom evidence is still developing, so it is fair to call spacing a promising principle rather than a guaranteed method. But it lines up with what we see week to week: children who do a little maths often pull ahead of children who do a lot of maths occasionally.

The schedule that works

Here is the rhythm we recommend at Nova, and the one we see working:

That is roughly two hours of maths a week, but it never feels like two hours, because no single sitting is a slog.

The time of day matters far less than parents expect. Some families do the 15 minutes after school, once their child has had a bit of time to decompress. Plenty do it after dinner. Either is fine. The thing you are protecting is the habit, not the hour.

What happens if you miss a day?

Nothing much, and this is the underrated benefit of a regular schedule.

If your child is practising four days a week and one gets away from you, the next day absorbs it. The routine has slack built in. The families who really suffer are the ones doing a single weekly session, because when that session gets missed, a fortnight can pass with no maths at all. One missed day out of four is a rounding error. One missed day out of one is a two-week gap.

Scheduling also removes something else that quietly derails good intentions: the need for motivation. A long session takes a big push to start, which is why it keeps sliding to tomorrow. Fifteen minutes does not need a big push. That is the whole point of keeping it short.

Revisiting the topics your child finds hard

Regular practice is only half of it. The other half is what your child practises.

Left to their own devices, most children happily do more of what they are already good at. It feels better. But maths works a bit like a language, and the topics a child struggles with tend to be the ones quietly holding back everything else. A child who is shaky on times tables will find equivalent fractions overwhelming. A child who does not know their number bonds will struggle with money, especially working out change.

So at Nova, every fourth lesson revisits a topic your child did not score well on, in class or in homework. It comes round often enough to make a difference and rarely enough that it does not feel like punishment. Over a term, those weak topics get chipped away at, and the improvement usually shows up somewhere else entirely.

Core skills: the things that should become automatic

Alongside lessons and homework, there is a set of things every child should be able to do without stopping to think. Times tables. Number bonds. Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000. For younger children, counting forwards and backwards on their fingers.

These are what we call core skills, and they are the foundation everything else is built on. They are also exactly the sort of thing that fades if it is not revisited. So we release a short core skills set every 48 hours, and send parents a reminder when a new one lands. Fifteen minutes, and it is done. Over a year, a child cycles through the core skills for their year group many times over, and as those foundations get solid, the rest of their maths gets easier almost as a side effect.

If your child is currently stuck, it is worth reading why children fall behind in maths, because the fix is very often a foundational gap rather than the topic they are visibly struggling with.

Making it something they will actually do

Reminding a child to do maths is easy. Getting them to want to is the real work.

In the run-up to SATs or the Year 4 multiplication tables check, most parents naturally step things up, and that is reasonable. It works best when the extra work builds on an existing routine rather than trying to replace six months of nothing with a burst of revision in April.
