The best next step isn't another explanation. It's a question that forces them to use the same rule straight away, such as: what is 245 divided by 10? To answer 24.5, they have to go back into their memory, find the rule they just met, and apply it.

That small act of retrieval is what moves the method from short-term to long-term memory. Do it once and it starts to stick. Do it regularly, spaced out over days and weeks, and it becomes second nature.
